Today the plan was to explore the Fjallabak region, taking the time to stop at various points of interest along the way.
We set off around 9 AM and navigated to the northern section of the F208. On the way, we made our first stop at Hjálparfoss waterfall ajust off Road 32. This site has a particular charm, being made up of not one but two waterfalls cascading down colossal basalt columns.
Our second stop of the day was at Sigöldugljúfur Canyon. We parked along Road 208 and took a roughly 1 km walk to reach a viewpoint overlooking a gorgeous canyon with multiple cascading waterfalls.
The place is particularly photogenic, the water color shifting with the movement of the clouds.
The sky cleared up by late morning so when we arrived in Fjallabak, we decided to take a detour towards Hnausapollur. Here, we were stunned by the view of the mountain reflected in the lake, the red and green colors of the crater's slopes thrown in sharp contrast with the blue water of the maar.
We enjoyed this peaceful spot for a long moment, taking our time to climb the small peak near the crater for a better vantage.
A bit further on, we stopped to climb the small Stútur crater before taking a long break by lake Frostastaðavatn. It was absolutely stunning, the mountains mirrored perfectly on the still water.
We decided to take a long walk around the lake to catch every angle. We took all the time in the world, enjoying the beautiful sunshine before heading back to our guesthouse in Ásólfsstaðir for a rewarding soak in the local hot pot.
