That day, our road trip continued towards the famous capital of the fjords, Ísafjörður, where we planned to stay for two days. But first, we were going to explore the hiking trail just above the small town of Thingeyri: the Sandfell hike, which had been recommended to us earlier that morning.
We intended to visit two other ports that day, Flateyri and Suðureyri, so we had a full schedule ahead of us.
Just before reaching the village, there was a small parking area where we left the car before starting the hike. The trail ascended toward the mountain overlooking Thingeyri. The hike wasn’t particularly difficult, but it did involve a significant climb, and it took us about 1.5 hours to complete the 7 km round trip.
Along the way, we passed beautiful fields brimming with lupine flowers alongside the hiking trail. At the top, there was a viewing station on a plateau that gave onto the various fjords and surrounding villages. The 360° panoramic view was stunning despite the light cloud cover that morning; we could see the village below and, on the other side, the rolling green plains stretching to the horizon.
Note: We parked on the side of Road 622, but it’s possible to shorten the hike by about 2 km if you park a bit closer to the trailhead.
At around 10:30AM, we continued on to Flateyri, a small villag with charming little streets that make for a lovely stroll.
Just before noon, we headed to Suðureyri and made a stop at the Fisherman Café, a great spot for lunch.
The weather was beautiful when we arrived in the lovely village of Ísafjörður. We made the most of it, taking the fantastic hiking trail that departs from the town center and overlooks the village for the first few kilometers. The gorgeous late afternoon sun was the perfect setting for our hike through fields of lupine flowers. The panoramic view of the village and fjord was simply superb. After hiking a few kilometers we headed back toward the center to spend the evening together and soak up some local culture.
The town center was picturesque and we had no trouble finding a nice place to have dinner.
