We had planned to explore the southern coast over the next two days. Today, we were heading east and stopping at various points of interest along the way. We left our accommodation around 9 AM.
On the way, we made a brief stop at the Litla Höf church near Skaftafell. This small church was simply charming with its turf roof and lush grassy lawn, a structure that very much looked like it belonged in this landscape.
We arrived late in the morning at Múlagljúfur canyon, where we planned to hike. This canyon had only been recently discovered so we were some of the first visitors to ever set eyes on this landscape.
The hike was easy, with a gradual ascent that offered several nice viewpoints over the first waterfall. Continuing the climb brought us closer to the second waterfall at the bottom of the canyon.
The hike was a true delight, the site so beautiful that we decided to spend our time having a picnic with a view.
On the way back, we decided to stop at Jökulsárlón. We'd been here before and knew it would be crowded but this site always felt kind of magical and unique. We recommend using the second parking lot, located about 500 meters from the main one on the road west.
There were hardly any people there, and the view of the lagoon was just as spectacular. We also did a hike there (there are 3 or 4 hikes offered at the entrance).
Before heading to our guesthouse, we made a stop at Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. By late afternoon, there were fewer tourists. This site had been significantly redesigned in recent years with the addition of several observation platforms along the trail.
The canyon was as stunning as we remembered, one of the most beautiful in all of Iceland.
