Jökulsarlon and Múlagljúfur

Jökulsarlon and Múlagljúfur

We plan to explore the southern coast over the next two days. Today, we will head east, stopping at various points of interest. We leave our accommodation around 9 AM this morning and head east.

Höfskirkja

On the way, we make a brief stop at the Litla Höf church near Skaftafell. This small church is charming with its turf roof and the surrounding grassy lawn. It appears to be nestled into the grass.

Múlagljúfur

We arrive late in the morning at the Múlagljúfur canyon, where we plan to hike. This canyon was discovered recently, and we had never visited it during our previous two trips.

The hike is easy, gradually ascending a hill that offers several nice viewpoints over the first waterfall. You then need to continue climbing to get closer to the second waterfall at the bottom of the canyon.

The hike is very pleasant, and the site is lovely, so we decide to spend a long time there and have a picnic.

Jökulsarlon

On the way back, we decide to stop at Jökulsárlón, even though we’re familiar with it and it’s quite crowded. This site has a magical and unique quality. We recommend the second parking lot, which was built about 500 meters from the main parking lot on the road west.

There are almost no people there, and the view of the lagoon is the same. We also do a hike there (3 or 4 hikes are offered at the entrance).

Fjaðrárgljúfur

Fjaðrárgljúfur

Before heading to our guesthouse, we make a stop at the nearby Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon. It’s late afternoon, and there are fewer tourists. This site has also been significantly redesigned in recent years with the creation of several observation platforms along the trail.

The canyon is still beautiful, probably one of the most stunning in Iceland.
