From Nesjavellir to Reykjavik

Unfortunately, our trip had come to an end. It was our last full day to enjoy, as we had an early flight from Keflavik the next morning.

We wanted to go for a hike before strolling around Reykjavik, so we made a slight detour to Nesjavellir, which we hadn’t visited before.

Just before arriving in Hveragerði, we turned onto Road 35, 360 and finally 435, which led to the Nesjavellir parking lot. This unusual attraction was a geothermal power plant located near the Hengill volcano.

There was a hiking trail around the area to discover local geothermal phenomena similar to those at Krysuvik, for example. The hike was 8.5 km long, not difficult at all, and very well-marked.

The first part was the most enjoyable, navigating fumaroles and mud pots before descending back to the power plant itself, and then looping around to the summit.

By noon, we were in Reykjavik and enjoyed a delicious traditional soup at Icelandic Street Food, a restaurant we highly recommend!

We spent our last afternoon strolling the city streets for a bit of shopping, enjoying a drink before heading to the Old Harbor.

We returned to the hotel fairly early because the very next day, we had to catch our flight to Geneva and the wake-up call was at 3:30 AM...
