From Nesjavellir to Reykjavik

Unfortunately, it’s the end of our trip, and today is our last full day to enjoy, as we have an early flight from Keflavik tomorrow.

We want to go for a hike before strolling around Reykjavik, so we make a slight detour to Nesjavellir, which we haven’t visited before.

Nesjavellir

Nesjavellir

Just before arriving in Hveragerði, we turn onto Route 35 to reach the small Road 360 and then Road 435, which lead to the Nesjavellir parking lot. Nesjavellir is actually a geothermal power plant located near the Hengill volcano.

Around this plant, there is a hike that allows you to observe geothermal phenomena similar to those at Krysuvik, for example. The hike is 8.5 km long, not very difficult, and very well-marked.

The first part is quite enjoyable as we walk among fumaroles and mud pots before descending back to the power plant and then looping around to the summit.

By noon, we are in Reykjavik and enjoy a delicious traditional soup at Icelandic Street Food, a restaurant we highly recommend!

We then spend our last afternoon strolling through the city streets, doing some shopping, and having a drink before heading to the Old Harbor for the rest of the afternoon.

We return to the hotel fairly early because tomorrow we have to get up at 3:30 AM to catch our flight to Geneva...
